Using the Icare rebound tonometer
We are trialling a new tonometer currently, which works by bouncing a small disposable probe on the patients eye. It is most accurate without anaesthetic, and is usually tolerated well. Full instructions downloadable below.
Single use probes are in the case. This diagram shows the positioning required, the device will show a green light when it is angled correctly. Press the measure button once for single measurement or hold it for a series of six. It walks you through the process.
I've had my own pressures measured and could barely feel the probe. It may be best to tell patients "I'm just going to measure your pressure, look straight ahead" rather than "I'm going to bounce a probe into your eye" to help reduce blinking.
Feedback to Tom Hoey please
